Question types, pacing and how to practise
TOPIK I: 30 questions, 40 minutes, 100 points. TOPIK II: 50 questions, 60 minutes, 100 points. Audio is played ONCE only (apart from a few early TOPIK I items), and difficulty rises steadily: short dialogues at the start, lectures, interviews and documentary excerpts at the end. Listening is the first section of the exam — latecomers are not admitted.
Choosing the dialogue that matches a picture (1–3), picking the next line, identifying where a conversation takes place, main idea, the speaker's purpose or attitude, selecting the statement that matches or contradicts the content. TOPIK II questions 41–50 give two questions per audio clip — read both before the clip starts.
Read each question's options BEFORE the audio begins — that tells you what to listen for. Jot down numbers, dates and place names as you listen. If you do not know an answer, mark something immediately and move on: TOPIK has no negative marking, and a blank is a guaranteed zero. The biggest mistake is going back to a missed question and losing the next clip too.
Use past papers with both the audio and the transcript: listen without the text first, answer, then listen again with the transcript and find exactly where you lost the thread. MOON's archive has the audio and transcript for every round. Twenty minutes a day of real-speed Korean (news, podcasts) makes a visible difference within two months. Do not slow the audio down — nobody slows it down in the exam.
The audio plays once. Everything else about listening strategy follows from that. You cannot go back, you cannot slow it down, and a question you are still thinking about is a question that is costing you the next one.
Accept a lost item immediately and move on. Candidates who refuse to let go of question 14 routinely lose 15, 16 and 17 as well, turning one mistake into four.
Between items there are a few seconds of silence. Those seconds are not rest — they are for reading the next question and its four options. Going into an item knowing that the options are four times, or four places, or four reasons tells you exactly what to hold on to while the Korean goes past.
Build this into practice from the first week. If you train by listening with the paper closed, you are training a skill the exam does not test and neglecting the one it does.
Take one past listening section with its transcript and audio. First pass: listen and answer, transcript closed, real timing. Second pass: listen while reading the transcript, and mark every place where what you heard was not what was said. Third pass: listen again with the transcript closed and check that the same places now come through.
That second pass is the whole exercise. The gap between what you heard and what was said is almost always the same handful of things — a linking sound, a contracted ending, a number, a word you know on the page but have never heard aloud.
The last fifteen or so questions carry the section. They are lectures, interviews and discussions, often with two questions on one recording, and they ask for attitude and intention rather than facts. The speaker's opinion is rarely stated outright; it sits in the connective, in a hedged ending, in whether they said it directly or reported it.
Practise these separately and slowly. Listening to easy material for an hour builds confidence and nothing else; listening to two hard items with a transcript builds the section.
Answer as you go and transfer nothing at the end. There is no time set aside for copying answers onto the sheet, and every year candidates lose marks they had already earned because the recording finished before the sheet was filled in.
