✒️ GKS personal statement and study plan

How to write the Personal Statement and Study Plan

Open in the app

What is asked

The application pack has two written documents. Personal Statement: who you are, why Korea, why this field — usually 1 page. Study Plan: WHAT and HOW you will study in Korea, how you will spend the language year, what you will do after graduating — for GKS-G it includes a research plan, up to 2 pages. NIIED supplies the form as a Word file; do not change the font or the page count.

The personal statement

The most common mistake is rewriting your CV: "I was born in 2005 and was a top pupil". The reviewer can see that in the transcript. Instead, one specific event — the situation that led you to this field — and the goal that grew from it. Structure: (1) the problem or interest that set you in motion, (2) what you did about it (project, work, olympiad — with facts), (3) why Korea and why GKS rather than other scholarships, (4) how you will benefit Uzbekistan after graduating. Most applicants drop the last part, yet for NIIED it is central: GKS looks for people who will be a bridge between Korea and their country.

The study plan

Here specifics win over generalities ("I want to expand my knowledge"). Language year: how you will reach TOPIK 3 (current level, plan). Degree: which courses, which lab or professor, why this university (write the exact programme name from its website). For GKS-G, the research topic: problem → existing work → your approach → expected result, with 3–5 academic references. Post-graduation: a concrete type of organisation or direction, and how you will keep the link with Korea.

Language, length, checking

Written in English or Korean; writing in Korean earns no extra points, so unless you have TOPIK 4+ write in English — errors cost more. Do not exceed the given length, and do not fall far short either (half a page signals "not interested"). AI-written text is now obvious to reviewers: generic, identical templates. When finished, have at least two people read it — one from your field, one outside it — and both should be able to say in two minutes what this person intends to do.
