Format

20 multiple-choice questions with 4 options each, 25 minutes, 50 points (2.5 per question). On a computer screen, questions in random order, and you can go back and change answers until time runs out. Questions are drawn from HRD Korea's open question bank — the questions in the exam come from a published set. That is the biggest difference from TOPIK: here, studying the question bank is direct preparation.

Question types

(1) Picture–word: a picture of a tool, clothing, food or transport — choose its name. (2) Signs and notices: workplace safety signs (금연, 위험, 출입금지, 안전모 착용), road signs, shop signs. (3) Fill the blank: a word or grammar point in a sentence. (4) Short text: a notice, a clause of an employment contract, a work schedule, instructions — a question about its content. (5) Dialogue: the next line or the meaning in a workplace conversation. Some 30–40% of questions concern the workplace and safety — the EPS-specific part.

What to study

The official textbook (한국어 표준교재, 60 lessons) — almost every Reading question stays within its vocabulary and grammar. Core vocabulary: tools (망치, 드릴, 장갑), the workplace (공장, 작업장, 현장, 기숙사), safety (안전, 사고, 조심, 응급), hours and pay (근무, 야근, 월급, 수당), daily life (병원, 은행, 마트). Grammar at TOPIK I level: -아/어요, -았/었어요, -(으)세요, -지 마세요, -(으)ㄹ 수 있다, -아/어야 하다, -고 있다. Memorise the safety signs with their pictures — they appear in every exam and are the easiest points.

Strategy

Do the picture and sign questions first (quick and easy), then move to the text questions — you have about 75 seconds per question on average. Do not stall on an unknown word; eliminate two of the four options and choose between the rest. There is no negative marking — never leave a blank. When working through the question bank, learn WHY the answer is right, not just which it is: in the exam the picture or sentence may be slightly altered.
